Sydney hot water prices at a glance

There is no official price list for hot water systems in Sydney. The figures below are our own 2026 planning ranges in Australian dollars, for supply and installation in a typical house, based on the kinds of jobs we see quoted. Use them to set a budget and sanity-check a quote. They are not quotes: the real number comes from a licensed plumber who has seen the installation, and an on-site quote is needed.

System Typical job 2026 guide (AUD, as a guide)
Repair Thermocouple, element, thermostat or valve on an existing unit $250 to $800
Electric storage Like-for-like tank, same position $1,500 to $3,200
Gas storage Like-for-like outdoor tank, same position $2,000 to $3,800
Gas continuous flow Replacing an existing unit, or a storage tank with adequate gas supply $2,300 to $4,500
Heat pump Replacing an electric tank, before any incentive $3,500 to $7,000
Solar (gas or electric boost) Roof collectors and tank $5,000 to $9,000

These ranges assume reasonable access and no major changes to pipework, gas or electrical supply. Anything outside that can move the price either way.

What pushes the price up

  • Changing fuel or position. New gas line, new water pipes, new electrical circuit, or moving a tank to a better spot all add labour and materials.
  • Gas supply upgrades. Continuous flow units need enough gas. If the meter or pipe is too small, upgrading adds to the job.
  • Access. Tanks in roof spaces, down steep steps or along narrow paths take longer to remove and install.
  • Size and rating. Bigger tanks, higher flow rates and higher energy ratings cost more to buy, though they may cost less to run.
  • Urgency. Same-day and after-hours work can carry a premium, and you may take whatever unit is in stock.
  • Extras. Replacing old valves, adding a safe tray under an indoor tank, or bringing the relief drain up to standard.

What can bring it down

  • Like-for-like in the same position, which avoids new pipework or gas work.
  • Planning ahead, so you can compare quotes rather than accept the first available.
  • Incentives for eligible heat pump and solar installations, where they apply.
  • Repairing instead of replacing, when the tank is sound and the fault is a part.

Running costs matter as much as the price

The purchase price is only part of the story. A standard electric tank on a continuous tariff can cost much more to run each year than a heat pump heating the same water. Gas running costs depend on gas prices and the system's efficiency. Over the life of a system, the difference in running costs can exceed the difference in purchase price.

When comparing quotes for different system types, ask each contractor to estimate running costs on your tariff, or at least to explain the trade-off.

How to compare quotes fairly

A complete hot water quote should name:

  1. The brand, model and capacity or flow rate of the new unit.
  2. The energy or star rating.
  3. Removal and disposal of the old unit.
  4. Valves to be replaced, and the tempering valve if required.
  5. Any gas, electrical or pipework changes.
  6. Any incentive or certificate discount, as a separate line.
  7. The certificate of compliance to be issued.
  8. Warranty terms on the unit and on the labour.

If two quotes differ widely, line them up against this list. The cheaper one often leaves something out.

Repairs

Repair costs depend on the part and the time to diagnose. A call-out or inspection fee may apply. If the quote for a repair on an older unit approaches a meaningful share of a replacement, it is worth asking for a replacement price as well. See hot water repairs.

Paperwork that protects you

Ask for the certificate of compliance for plumbing and any gas work, and keep it with the manufacturer's warranty card and the invoice. If the unit fails under warranty, you will need them.

FAQs

Questions people ask before they commit

Why do two hot water quotes differ so much?

Usually because they are not quoting the same job. One may include a tempering valve, new valves, a gas pipe upgrade and disposal of the old unit, while the other leaves some out or quotes a smaller or lower-rated unit. Compare them line by line.

Do incentives reduce the price of a heat pump?

They have. The NSW Energy Savings Scheme and federal small-scale certificates have reduced the upfront price of eligible heat pump and solar systems. Amounts change, so ask that any discount be shown on the quote.

Is the quote free?

Yes. Quotes arranged through us are free and you are under no obligation to proceed.

Does a same-day replacement cost more?

It can, if it means after-hours labour or taking whatever unit is in stock. If your system is still working, planning a replacement gives you time to compare options.

What is the cheapest way to get hot water back?

If the fault is repairable, a repair is usually cheapest in the short term. If the tank is leaking, a like-for-like replacement in the same position is usually the least expensive replacement.
