Hot water system replacement in Blacktown

For hot water system replacement or repairs in Blacktown and nearby suburbs, call the Blacktown line on 02 5943 9496. Hot Water System Sydney arranges an independent local licensed plumber or gasfitter to look at the system and give you a written quote. Quotes are free.

The Blacktown local government area is large and growing. Within a short drive you can go from a 1960s brick veneer home in Seven Hills to a two-year-old double-storey in Marsden Park, and the right hot water answer differs between them.

Established suburbs

Suburbs such as Blacktown itself, Seven Hills, Doonside, Lalor Park, Mount Druitt and Rooty Hill have large numbers of homes built from the 1960s through the 1980s. Typical hot water setups are an electric storage tank on an off-peak circuit or an outdoor gas storage tank. Many of these systems have been replaced at least once, sometimes with a unit that is smaller than the household now needs.

When a tank fails in one of these homes, a like-for-like replacement is usually quickest. It is also a good moment to ask whether a larger tank, a heat pump or a continuous flow gas unit would suit the household better. Older pipework and relief valve drains are worth having checked at the same time.

Newer estates

The north-west growth area — Schofields, Marsden Park, Riverstone, The Ponds and surrounds — has thousands of homes built in the last fifteen years or so. Builders have used a mix of gas continuous flow, electric storage, heat pumps and solar. Many systems are still within at least part of their warranty period.

Common issues include continuous flow error codes, heat pumps with fan or compressor faults, and units installed in tight side setbacks where access is awkward. If you are on a small lot, a heat pump's position relative to bedrooms and neighbours deserves thought, because the compressor makes noise when it runs.

What is usually involved

  • Diagnosis. Many no-hot-water calls are fixable faults: an igniter, thermocouple, element, thermostat or tripped circuit. See hot water repairs.
  • Replacement. Old unit drained and removed, new unit fitted with the valves it needs, tempering valve installed where required, and the relief drain checked. See hot water system replacement.
  • Fuel change. Electric to heat pump, gas storage to continuous flow, or adding solar. Each has extra work and should be on the quote. See gas hot water and heat pump and solar.

Network and rules

Blacktown is in the Endeavour Energy network area. If your electric tank is on a controlled-load (off-peak) circuit and you change system, ask your retailer how the tariff will change. Mains water is supplied by Sydney Water.

Hot water installation is plumbing work and gas connection is gasfitting work, both licensed by NSW Fair Trading. We ask the contractors we work with to hold the licences and insurance the job needs — ask to see them before work starts, and ask for the certificate of compliance when the work is complete. Council questions go to Blacktown City Council.

Common questions

Before you book: the usual questions

My Blacktown home is in a new estate. Should I repair or claim warranty?

Check the warranty first. Newer homes in Marsden Park, Schofields and similar estates often have systems that are still covered by the manufacturer for some components. Find the model number and installation date, and call the manufacturer before paying for a repair.

Can I swap my gas storage tank for continuous flow?

Often, but the gas supply has to be big enough. Continuous flow units draw a lot of gas while running, and older meters and pipe sizes were not designed for it. The plumber should check before quoting, and the quote should say if a pipe upgrade is included.

Does Blacktown City Council need to approve a hot water replacement?

A replacement of an existing system is generally exempt development in NSW, subject to conditions such as heat pump noise limits. New positions, heritage properties or unusual installations can be different. Check with Blacktown City Council if unsure.
